Assisted living communities provide social events, supervision, and care to individuals around 65 years of age or older. Services offered often involve support with the activities of daily life. Residents may be kept under supervision and assessment. Under certain circumstances, communities may offer hospice, respite, or skilled nursing care. In Missouri, the annual median cost for an assisted living community is around $34,566 . The state of Missouri maintains a number of provisions related to this type of community. The Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services, Division of Regulation and Licensure, Section for Long-Term Care Regulation supervises this type of community. This type of community is required to have a staff member on duty 24 hours a day. There must be one bath or shower for every 1 residents and one toilet for every 1 residents. This community type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include insulin injections may be administered by a certified medication technician or level i medication aide who has successfully completed the state-approved course for insulin administration, Injections may be administered only by a physician or licensed nurse, and self-administer prescription and nonprescription medications if a licensed health provider approves. This community has a number of provisions concerning food and diet which include communities must provide at least three daily meals, modified diets must be reviewed at least quarterly by a consulting nutritionist, dietitian, RN, or physician, and modified diets prescribed by a physician can be provided. Staff members receive training in a variety of subjects. These include: 24 hours of additional training on interview skills, instruction regarding person-centered care and the social model of care, working with residents with mental illness, and techniques that are effective in enhancing residents’ choice and control over their environment. Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to guarantee their needs are going to be met. This screening includes a number of areas of interest such as an individualized evacuation plan must be developed for residents who require more than minimal assistance to evacuate, an individualized service plan must be developed that describes the services to be provided to meet the resident’s needs, complete screening prior to admission to determine whether an applicant is eligible to be admitted, and authorized staff person and a physician must conduct a physical exam to document the individual’s current medical status and write any special orders regarding care and needed procedures. Public assistance is available through the Medicaid State Plan Personal Care authority. This type of community is required to offer a number of services. These include assistance with distribution, 24-hour care, assistance with activities of daily living , and assistance with instrumental activities of daily living.
