Assisted Living

An assisted living community is an organized living community which provides aid, care, and supervision to healthy persons who do not require skilled nursing services. The services offered often include help with activities of daily living. Inhabitants may be kept under observation and evaluation. Under certain circumstances, communities may provide continuing care, hospice, or respite. In Missouri, the annual median cost for an assisted living community is around $34,566 . The state of Missouri maintains a number of provisions related to this type of community. The Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services, Division of Regulation and Licensure, Section for Long-Term Care Regulation governs this type of community. This community has a number of provisions concerning food and diet which include modified diets prescribed by a physician can be provided, modified diets must be reviewed at least quarterly by a consulting nutritionist, dietitian, RN, or physician, and communities must provide at least three daily meals. Staff must obtain education in a number of fields. These include: behavior management, (2 hours) of initial training on transfer assistance, abuse/neglect, and communicating with persons with dementia. There must be one bath or shower for every 1 residents and one toilet for every 1 residents. This type of community is required to have a staff member on duty 24 hours a day. This type of community is required to offer a number of services. These include assistance with activities of daily living , protective oversight, assistance with administration of medications, and assistance with recreational activities. Public assistance is available through the Medicaid State Plan Personal Care authority. Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to assure their needs are going to be met. This screening includes a number of areas of interest such as an individualized service plan must be developed that describes the services to be provided to meet the resident’s needs, an individualized evacuation plan must be developed for residents who require more than minimal assistance to evacuate, assessment must be repeated whenever the resident has a significant change in condition and at least semiannually, and authorized staff person and a physician must conduct a physical exam to document the individual’s current medical status and write any special orders regarding care and needed procedures. This community type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include Injections may be administered only by a physician or licensed nurse, self-administer prescription and nonprescription medications if a licensed health provider approves, and insulin injections may be administered by a certified medication technician or level i medication aide who has successfully completed the state-approved course for insulin administration.
