Assisted living communities provide organized living communities and health care for people who need help with everyday activities such as mobility or dressing. Assisted living communities often provide chances for leisurely activity, aid with appointments and transit, and supervision of care. Under certain circumstances, communities may provide “aging in place”, Alzheimer’s care, or respite. In Missouri, the annual median cost for an assisted living community is around $34,566 . The state of Missouri maintains specific rules associated with this type of community. The Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services, Division of Regulation and Licensure, Section for Long-Term Care Regulation supervises this community type. Public assistance is available through the Medicaid State Plan Personal Care authority. This community has a number of provisions concerning food and diet which include modified diets must be reviewed at least quarterly by a consulting nutritionist, dietitian, RN, or physician, modified diets prescribed by a physician can be provided, and communities must provide at least three daily meals. This community type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include self-administer prescription and nonprescription medications if a licensed health provider approves, Injections may be administered only by a physician or licensed nurse, and insulin injections may be administered by a certified medication technician or level i medication aide who has successfully completed the state-approved course for insulin administration. Staff members obtain training in a variety of fields. These areas include communicating with persons with dementia, fire safety, techniques that are effective in enhancing residents’ choice and control over their environment, and working with residents with mental illness. This type of community is required to offer a number of services. These include nursing services, assistance with administration of medications, protective oversight, and assistance with activities of daily living . Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to ensure their needs are going to be met. This screening includes a number of areas of interest such as complete screening prior to admission to determine whether an applicant is eligible to be admitted, authorized staff person and a physician must conduct a physical exam to document the individual’s current medical status and write any special orders regarding care and needed procedures, an individualized evacuation plan must be developed for residents who require more than minimal assistance to evacuate, and an individualized service plan must be developed that describes the services to be provided to meet the resident’s needs. This type of community is required to have a staff member on duty 24 hours a day. There must be one toilet for every 1 residents and one bath or shower for every 1 residents.
