Assisted living communities offer social opportunities, personal care, and supervision to persons who are about 65 years old. Services provided often involve aid with the activities of daily life. Occupants may be kept under monitoring and assessment. Under certain circumstances, communities may provide continuing care, hospice, or dementia care. In Missouri, the annual median cost for an assisted living community is around $34,566 . The state of Missouri has specific standards related to this kind of community. The Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services, Division of Regulation and Licensure, Section for Long-Term Care Regulation governs this type of community. Public assistance is available through the Medicaid State Plan Personal Care authority. This type of community is required to have a staff member on duty 24 hours a day. There must be one toilet for every 1 residents and one bath or shower for every 1 residents. This community type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include Injections may be administered only by a physician or licensed nurse, self-administer prescription and nonprescription medications if a licensed health provider approves, and a physician, pharmacist, or registered nurse (RN) must review the medication regimen of each resident every other month. Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to assure their needs are going to be met. This screening includes a number of areas of interest such as an individualized evacuation plan must be developed for residents who require more than minimal assistance to evacuate, complete screening prior to admission to determine whether an applicant is eligible to be admitted, an individualized service plan must be developed that describes the services to be provided to meet the resident’s needs, and authorized staff person and a physician must conduct a physical exam to document the individual’s current medical status and write any special orders regarding care and needed procedures. This community has a number of provisions concerning food and diet which include modified diets must be reviewed at least quarterly by a consulting nutritionist, dietitian, RN, or physician, communities must provide at least three daily meals, and modified diets prescribed by a physician can be provided. This type of community is required to offer a number of services. These include assistance with storage of medications, protective oversight, assistance with distribution, and 24-hour care. Staff must obtain education in a variety of fields. These areas include 24 hours of additional training consisting of definition and assessment of activities of daily living, abuse/neglect, working with residents with mental illness, and behavior management.
