Assisted living communities provide residential living communities and assistance for seniors who may require help with everyday activities such as mobility or self-administering medication. The services provided often involve support with activities of daily living. Residents may be kept under observation and evaluation. In certain situations, communities may provide hospice, nursing care, or continuing care. In Missouri, the annual median cost for an assisted living community is around $34,566 . The state of Missouri maintains specific statutes related to this kind of community. The Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services, Division of Regulation and Licensure, Section for Long-Term Care Regulation licenses this type of community. This community type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include insulin injections may be administered by a certified medication technician or level i medication aide who has successfully completed the state-approved course for insulin administration, self-administer prescription and nonprescription medications if a licensed health provider approves, and a physician, pharmacist, or registered nurse (RN) must review the medication regimen of each resident every other month. This community has a number of provisions concerning food and diet which include modified diets prescribed by a physician can be provided, communities must provide at least three daily meals, and modified diets must be reviewed at least quarterly by a consulting nutritionist, dietitian, RN, or physician. This type of community is required to offer a number of services. These include assistance with recreational activities, assistance with administration of medications, protective oversight, and 24-hour care. Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to make sure their needs are going to be met. This screening includes a number of areas of interest such as assessment must be repeated whenever the resident has a significant change in condition and at least semiannually, authorized staff person and a physician must conduct a physical exam to document the individual’s current medical status and write any special orders regarding care and needed procedures, complete screening prior to admission to determine whether an applicant is eligible to be admitted, and an individualized service plan must be developed that describes the services to be provided to meet the resident’s needs. There must be one bath or shower for every 1 residents and one toilet for every 1 residents. This type of community is required to have a staff member on duty 24 hours a day. Public assistance is available through the Medicaid State Plan Personal Care authority. Staff are required to obtain education in a number of subjects. These include: fire safety, 24 hours of additional training consisting of definition and assessment of activities of daily living, orientation appropriate to job function and responsibilities, and behavior management.
