Assisted living communities provide social interaction, supervision, and care to persons around 65 years of age or older. Assisted living communities usually offer aid with appointments and transit, aid with the activities of daily life, and chances for recreational activity. Under certain circumstances, communities may provide skilled nursing care, respite, or “aging in place”. In Missouri, the annual median cost for an assisted living community is around $34,566 . The state of Missouri has a number of stipulations related to this type of community. The Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services, Division of Regulation and Licensure, Section for Long-Term Care Regulation governs this community type. Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to ensure their needs are going to be met. This screening includes a number of areas of interest such as authorized staff person and a physician must conduct a physical exam to document the individual’s current medical status and write any special orders regarding care and needed procedures, assessment must be repeated whenever the resident has a significant change in condition and at least semiannually, an individualized evacuation plan must be developed for residents who require more than minimal assistance to evacuate, and complete screening prior to admission to determine whether an applicant is eligible to be admitted. This type of community is required to have a staff member on duty 24 hours a day. There must be one toilet for every 1 residents and one bath or shower for every 1 residents. Staff must obtain education in a number of fields. These include: 24 hours of additional training on interview skills, abuse/neglect, preservation of resident dignity, and behavior management. This type of community is required to offer a number of services. These include assistance with administration of medications, assistance with distribution, assistance with activities of daily living , and protective oversight. This community type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include self-administer prescription and nonprescription medications if a licensed health provider approves, insulin injections may be administered by a certified medication technician or level i medication aide who has successfully completed the state-approved course for insulin administration, and Injections may be administered only by a physician or licensed nurse. Public assistance is available through the Medicaid State Plan Personal Care authority. This community has a number of provisions concerning food and diet which include communities must provide at least three daily meals, modified diets prescribed by a physician can be provided, and modified diets must be reviewed at least quarterly by a consulting nutritionist, dietitian, RN, or physician.
