Assisted living communities have the luxury of apartment style housing and social interaction as well as personalized assistance. Assisted living communities frequently provide aid with appointments and transit, care supervision, and opportunities for recreational activity. In some situations, communities may offer hospice, dementia care, or respite. In Missouri, the annual median cost for an assisted living community is around $34,566 . The state of Missouri has specific standards related to this kind of community. The Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services, Division of Regulation and Licensure, Section for Long-Term Care Regulation governs this type of community. This type of community is required to offer a number of services. These include assistance with storage of medications, assistance with distribution, assistance with activities of daily living , and assistance with instrumental activities of daily living. Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to assure their needs are going to be met. This screening includes a number of areas of interest such as complete screening prior to admission to determine whether an applicant is eligible to be admitted, assessment must be repeated whenever the resident has a significant change in condition and at least semiannually, authorized staff person and a physician must conduct a physical exam to document the individual’s current medical status and write any special orders regarding care and needed procedures, and an individualized evacuation plan must be developed for residents who require more than minimal assistance to evacuate. This type of community is required to have a staff member on duty 24 hours a day. There must be one toilet for every 1 residents and one bath or shower for every 1 residents. This community type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include self-administer prescription and nonprescription medications if a licensed health provider approves, Injections may be administered only by a physician or licensed nurse, and a physician, pharmacist, or registered nurse (RN) must review the medication regimen of each resident every other month. Staff must receive training in a variety of subjects. These areas include promoting independence in activities of daily living, 24 hours of additional training on assessment on cognitive ability, communicating with persons with dementia, and behavior management. Public assistance is available through the Medicaid State Plan Personal Care authority. This community has a number of provisions concerning food and diet which include modified diets must be reviewed at least quarterly by a consulting nutritionist, dietitian, RN, or physician, modified diets prescribed by a physician can be provided, and communities must provide at least three daily meals.
