Assisted living communities have the luxury of apartment style housing and social interaction as well as individual care. The types of service offered often involve help with the activities of daily life. Occupants may be kept under observation and evaluation. Under certain circumstances, communities may offer Alzheimer’s care, hospice, or continuing care. In Missouri, the annual median cost for an assisted living community is around $34,566 . The state of Missouri has specific statutes associated with this kind of community. The Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services, Division of Regulation and Licensure, Section for Long-Term Care Regulation supervises this community type. Public assistance is available through the Medicaid State Plan Personal Care authority. Staff members obtain education in a variety of fields. These areas include abuse/neglect, preservation of resident dignity, techniques that are effective in enhancing residents’ choice and control over their environment, and orientation appropriate to job function and responsibilities. This type of community is required to offer a number of services. These include nursing services, protective oversight, assistance with instrumental activities of daily living, and 24-hour care. Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to make sure their needs are going to be met. This screening includes a number of areas of interest such as an individualized evacuation plan must be developed for residents who require more than minimal assistance to evacuate, complete screening prior to admission to determine whether an applicant is eligible to be admitted, authorized staff person and a physician must conduct a physical exam to document the individual’s current medical status and write any special orders regarding care and needed procedures, and an individualized service plan must be developed that describes the services to be provided to meet the resident’s needs. This community type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include self-administer prescription and nonprescription medications if a licensed health provider approves, a physician, pharmacist, or registered nurse (RN) must review the medication regimen of each resident every other month, and Injections may be administered only by a physician or licensed nurse. This community has a number of provisions concerning food and diet which include communities must provide at least three daily meals, modified diets must be reviewed at least quarterly by a consulting nutritionist, dietitian, RN, or physician, and modified diets prescribed by a physician can be provided. There must be one toilet for every 1 residents and one bath or shower for every 1 residents. This type of community is required to have a staff member on duty 24 hours a day.
