Assisted Living

An assisted living community is a residential living community which provides aid, support, and care to independent individuals who do not require skilled nursing services. Assisted living communities often provide assistance with the activities of daily life, care supervision, and opportunities for organized activity. In select instances, communities may provide “aging in place”, respite, or Alzheimer’s care. In Missouri, the annual median cost for an assisted living community is around $34,566 . Missouri has a number of stipulations associated with this kind of community. The Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services, Division of Regulation and Licensure, Section for Long-Term Care Regulation certifies this community type. This community has a number of provisions concerning food and diet which include modified diets must be reviewed at least quarterly by a consulting nutritionist, dietitian, RN, or physician, modified diets prescribed by a physician can be provided, and communities must provide at least three daily meals. This type of community is required to have a staff member on duty 24 hours a day. There must be one bath or shower for every 1 residents and one toilet for every 1 residents. This community type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include self-administer prescription and nonprescription medications if a licensed health provider approves, Injections may be administered only by a physician or licensed nurse, and a physician, pharmacist, or registered nurse (RN) must review the medication regimen of each resident every other month. This type of community is required to offer a number of services. These include 24-hour care, assistance with administration of medications, assistance with activities of daily living , and assistance with distribution. Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to ensure their needs are going to be met. This screening includes a number of areas of interest such as authorized staff person and a physician must conduct a physical exam to document the individual’s current medical status and write any special orders regarding care and needed procedures, an individualized service plan must be developed that describes the services to be provided to meet the resident’s needs, assessment must be repeated whenever the resident has a significant change in condition and at least semiannually, and complete screening prior to admission to determine whether an applicant is eligible to be admitted. Public assistance is available through the Medicaid State Plan Personal Care authority. Staff are required to obtain training in a variety of fields. These areas include preservation of resident dignity, 24 hours of additional training on interview skills, communicating with persons with dementia, and 24 hours of additional training on assessment on cognitive ability.
