Assisted living communities provide recreational activities, supervision, and care to individuals around 65 years of age or older. Assisted living communities frequently provide aid with daily activities, opportunities for social activity, and assistance with transportation and appointments. In certain cases, communities may offer nursing care, dementia care, or respite. In Missouri, the annual median cost for an assisted living community is around $34,566 . Missouri has specific standards related to this type of community. The Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services, Division of Regulation and Licensure, Section for Long-Term Care Regulation certifies this type of community. This type of community is required to have a staff member on duty 24 hours a day. There must be one bath or shower for every 1 residents and one toilet for every 1 residents. Public assistance is available through the Medicaid State Plan Personal Care authority. Staff must obtain education in a variety of areas. These areas include communicating with persons with dementia, 24 hours of additional training on assessment on cognitive ability, 24 hours of additional training consisting of definition and assessment of activities of daily living, and abuse/neglect. Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to guarantee their needs are going to be met. This screening includes a number of areas of interest such as assessment must be repeated whenever the resident has a significant change in condition and at least semiannually, authorized staff person and a physician must conduct a physical exam to document the individual’s current medical status and write any special orders regarding care and needed procedures, an individualized evacuation plan must be developed for residents who require more than minimal assistance to evacuate, and complete screening prior to admission to determine whether an applicant is eligible to be admitted. This type of community is required to offer a number of services. These include assistance with instrumental activities of daily living, assistance with activities of daily living , assistance with administration of medications, and 24-hour care. This community has a number of provisions concerning food and diet which include communities must provide at least three daily meals, modified diets must be reviewed at least quarterly by a consulting nutritionist, dietitian, RN, or physician, and modified diets prescribed by a physician can be provided. This community type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include self-administer prescription and nonprescription medications if a licensed health provider approves, Injections may be administered only by a physician or licensed nurse, and insulin injections may be administered by a certified medication technician or level i medication aide who has successfully completed the state-approved course for insulin administration.
