Assisted Living

An assisted living facility is a residential living community which provides aid, care, and supervision to healthy persons who do not need skilled nursing support. Assisted living facilities commonly provide care supervision, aid with transportation and appointments, and chances for organized activity. Under certain circumstances, facilities may offer Alzheimer’s care, “aging in place”, or respite. In Massachusetts, the annual median cost for an assisted living facility is around $67,680 . Massachusetts has specific rules associated with this type of facility. The Executive Office of Elder Affairs licenses this facility type. This facility type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include reading the medication label to residents, opening containers and pre-packaged medications, and reminding residents to take medications. This facility has a number of provisions concerning food and diet which include a qualified dietitian must review the residence’s dietary plans at least every 6 months, qualified dietitian must counsel residents regarding therapeutic diets and other dietary issues, a qualified dietitian must review residents’ dietary needs, and facilities must provide up to three regularly scheduled meals daily. Public assistance is available through Medicaid 1915(c) Waiver program. This type of facility is required to offer a number of services. These include timely assistance with urgent or emergency needs, management of self-administered prescription or over-the-counter medications, assistance with activities of daily living , and assistance with instrumental activities of daily living. Staff members obtain training in a variety of subjects. These areas include Sanitation and food safety, philosophy of independent living, Review of the aging process, and Job requirements. There must be one toilet for every 1 residents and one bath or shower for every 1 residents. This type of facility is required to have a staff member on duty 24 hours a day. Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to assure their needs are going to be met. This screening includes a number of areas of interest such as assessment of residents need for assistance in emergency situations, assessment of residents ability to manage medications, assessment of residents current diagnoses and medical history, and assessment of the individual’s needs and preferences.
