An assisted living community is an organized living community which administers aid, support, and care to independent persons who do not require skilled nursing care. Assisted living communities usually provide assistance with appointments and transportation, outings for leisurely activity, and care supervision. In some instances, communities may offer “aging in place”, nursing care, or respite. In Massachusetts, the annual median cost for an assisted living community is around $67,680 . The state of Massachusetts has a number of provisions associated with this kind of community. The Executive Office of Elder Affairs licenses this community type. Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to make sure their needs are going to be met. This screening includes a number of areas of interest such as assessment of residents current diagnoses and medical history, assessment of residents ability to manage medications, assessment of allergies and dietary needs, and assessment of the individual’s needs and preferences. Public assistance is available through Medicaid 1915(c) Waiver program. This community type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include observing residents while they take the medication, reminding residents to take medications, and opening containers and pre-packaged medications. Staff are required to receive training in a variety of subjects. These areas include Job requirements, 7-hour general orientation , financial exploitation, and resident bill of rights. This type of community is required to offer a number of services. These include assistance with instrumental activities of daily living, timely assistance with urgent or emergency needs, assistance with activities of daily living , and management of self-administered prescription or over-the-counter medications. This community has a number of provisions concerning food and diet which include communities must use daily recommended dietary allowances as established by the Food and Nutrition Board of the National Research Council of the National Academy of Sciences, qualified dietitian must counsel residents regarding therapeutic diets and other dietary issues, a qualified dietitian must review the residence’s dietary plans at least every 6 months, and communities must provide up to three regularly scheduled meals daily. This type of community is required to have a staff member on duty 24 hours a day. There must be one toilet for every 1 residents and one bath or shower for every 1 residents.
