An assisted living community is a residential community which offers care, assistance, and supervision to medically stable persons who are not in need of skilled nursing services. Assisted living communities commonly provide supervision of care, aid with the activities of daily life, and outings for organized activity. In some instances, communities may provide hospice, “aging in place”, or respite. In Kansas, the annual median cost for an assisted living community is around $53,670 . The state of Kansas has specific regulations associated with this kind of community. The Secretary of Aging and Disability Services supervises this type of community. This community type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include self-administer medications, medication regimens are reviewed each time the resident experiences a significant change in condition, and medications may be administered by community staff. This community has a number of provisions concerning food and diet which include menus must be planned based on The Dietary Guidelines for Americans, therapeutic diets are provided if included in the negotiated service agreement, and residents must have input into the selection of food served and the timing of meals. This type of community is required to offer a number of services. These include health care services based on an assessment by a licensed nurse, medical, social transportation, and supervised nursing care. The minimum number of residents for this community type is 6. This type of community is required to have a staff member on duty 24 hours a day. Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to ensure their needs are going to be met.
