Assisted Living

An assisted living facility is a residential community which offers assistance, support, and care to healthy persons who do not require skilled nursing care. The services provided often include support with ADLs. Residents may be kept under supervision and assessment. In certain cases, facilities may offer nursing, hospice, or "aging in place". In Kansas, the annual median cost for an assisted living facility is around $53,670 . Kansas has specific standards associated with this type of facility. The Secretary of Aging and Disability Services governs this type of facility. This facility has a number of provisions concerning food and diet which include residents must have input into the selection of food served and the timing of meals, therapeutic diets are provided if included in the negotiated service agreement, and menus must be planned based on The Dietary Guidelines for Americans. This type of facility is required to have a staff member on duty 24 hours a day. The minimum number of residents for this facility type is 6. Public assistance is available through Medicaid 1915(c) Home and Community-Based Services waivers,.This facility type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include medication regimens are reviewed at least quarterly, self-administer medications, and medication regimens are revewed each time the resident experiences a significant change in condition. This type of facility is required to offer a number of services. These include medical, planned activities, supervised nursing care, and housekeeping. Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to make sure their needs are going to be met. This screening includes a number of areas of interest such as facilities must develop a negotiated service agreement for each resident, If the resident requires health care services, a licensed nurse must develop a health care service plan, The agreement describes the parties responsible for payment when services are provised by an outside agency, and The agreement describes the services that will be provided.
