An assisted living community is a residential community which administers support, supervision, and care to healthy persons who are not in need of skilled nursing support. Assisted living communities usually provide opportunities for leisurely activity, aid with the activities of daily life, and care supervision. Under certain circumstances, communities may provide hospice, respite, or continuing care. In Kansas, the annual median cost for an assisted living community is around $53,670 . The state of Kansas maintains a number of stipulations associated with this type of community. The Secretary of Aging and Disability Services certifies this type of community. This community type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include medication regimens are reviewed at least quarterly, medication regimens are reviewed each time the resident experiences a significant change in condition, and self-administer medications. Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to assure their needs are going to be met. This screening includes a number of areas of interest such as communities must develop a negotiated service agreement for each resident, If the resident requires health care services, a licensed nurse must develop a health care service plan, The agreement describes the services that will be provided, and The negotiated service agreement is reviewed at least annually or when requested. This community has a number of provisions concerning food and diet which include therapeutic diets are provided if included in the negotiated service agreement, menus must be planned based on The Dietary Guidelines for Americans, and residents must have input into the selection of food served and the timing of meals. The minimum number of residents for this community type is 6. This type of community is required to have a staff member on duty 24 hours a day. This type of community is required to offer a number of services. These include other services needed to support residents’ health and safety, health care services based on an assessment by a licensed nurse, social transportation, and personal care. Public assistance is available through Medicaid 1915(c) Home and Community-Based Services waivers,.
