Assisted living communities administer social events, care, and oversight to persons who are about 65 years of age or older. Services provided often involve aid with ADLs. Occupants may be kept under observation and assessment. In certain instances, communities may provide hospice, respite, or dementia care. The Department of Inspections and Appeals, Health communities Division certifies this type of community. There must be one bath or shower for every 1 residents and one toilet for every 1 residents. The minimum number of residents for this community type is 3. This type of community is required to have a staff member on duty 24 hours a day. Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to guarantee their needs are going to be met. This screening includes a number of areas of interest such as a multidisciplinary team must be involved in service planning when residents require personal care or health-related services, negotiated risk agreement, and a comprehensive mental and physical assessment. This community type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include opening containers, packaging at the resident’s direction, and reading instructions or other label information. This type of community is required to offer a number of services. These include assistance with activities of daily living, assistance with personal care, health-related services, and resident access to a 24-hour personal emergency response system. Public assistance is available through Medicaid 1915(c) Elderly Waiver program. This community has a number of provisions concerning food and diet which include all meals must follow recommendations of the National Academy of Sciences Food and Nutrition Board, a health care provider must prescribe a therapeutic diet, a healthcare provider must review food preparation and service procedures, and communities must provide hot meals at least once a day. Staff members obtain education in a number of fields. These areas include emergency procedures, accident, fire safety, and assisted living management or nursing course.
