Assisted living communities provide organized living communities and health care for persons who require support with things such as bathing or preparing meals. Assisted living communities usually offer support with the activities of daily life, aid with appointments and transportation, and supervision of care. In select instances, communities may provide nursing, respite, or hospice. In Indiana, the annual median cost for an assisted living community is around 49,200. The state of Indiana maintains specific standards related to this type of community. Indiana State Department of Health certifies this community type. This type of community is required to offer a number of services. These include identifying responses to actual or potential health conditions, activities and programs appropriate to residents’ abilities and interests, a nursing diagnosis, and scheduled transportation for community-based activities. Public assistance is available through Medicaid A&D and TBI 1915(c) Waiver program. Staff are required to receive training in a number of fields. These areas include emergency procedures, including evacuation procedures, fire and disaster preparedness, and demonstration of equipment. This community type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include resident must be observed for effects of medications and undesirable effects must be documented and the resident’s physician notified, Medications may be administered under physician’s order by licensed nursing personnel or qualified medication aides, and preparation of prescribed medications. communities must consider residents’ personal preference meals may temporarily be delivered to the resident’s room. This community has a number of provisions concerning food and diet which include communities must consider residents’ reasonable religious preferences, communities must consider residents’ food allergies, communities must provide three meals a day, and communities must meet daily dietary requirements and requests. Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to make sure their needs are going to be met. This screening includes a number of areas of interest such as A comprehensive assessment, a negotiated risk plan will be established, evaluation must be updated at least semi-annually or when a significant change in condition occurs, and community will identify scope of care based on evaluation.
