Assisted living communities provide organized living communities and aid for your loved one who might need support with everyday activities such as meal preparation or taking medication. The types of service provided often involve aid with the activities of daily life. Residents may be kept under observation and evaluation. In select instances, communities may provide respite, “aging in place”, or skilled nursing care. In Indiana, the annual median cost for an assisted living community is around 49,200. Indiana maintains specific statutes related to this type of community. Indiana State Department of Health licenses this type of community. This type of community is required to offer a number of services. These include activities and programs appropriate to residents’ abilities and interests, identifying responses to actual or potential health conditions, scheduled transportation for community-based activities, and executing a minor regimen based upon a nursing diagnosis or as prescribed by a physician, physician’s assistant, chiropractor, dentist, optometrist, podiatrist, or nurse practitioner. communities must consider residents’ personal preference meals may temporarily be delivered to the resident’s room Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to assure their needs are going to be met. This screening includes a number of areas of interest such as A comprehensive assessment, evaluation must be updated at least semi-annually or when a significant change in condition occurs, community will identify scope of care based on evaluation, and a negotiated risk plan will be established. Staff members obtain training in a variety of areas. These include: instructions on the needs of the specialized populations served in the community, ethical considerations, emergency procedures, and procedures required. This community has a number of provisions concerning food and diet which include communities must meet daily dietary requirements and requests, communities must consider residents’ reasonable religious preferences, communities must consider residents’ food allergies, and meals must provide a balanced distribution of the daily nutritional requirements. This community type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include distribution of prescribed medications, preparation of prescribed medications, and resident must be observed for effects of medications and undesirable effects must be documented and the resident’s physician notified. Public assistance is available through Medicaid A&D and TBI 1915(c) Waiver program.
