Assisted living communities provide apartment-style housing and social interaction as well as individual help. Services offered often involve aid with the activities of daily life. Inhabitants may be kept under supervision and assessment. Under certain circumstances, communities may provide skilled nursing care, dementia care, or “aging in place”. In Indiana, the annual median cost for an assisted living community is around 49,200. The state of Indiana maintains a number of provisions related to this type of community. These include identifying responses to actual or potential health conditions, a nursing diagnosis, executing a minor regimen based upon a nursing diagnosis or as prescribed by a physician, physician’s assistant, chiropractor, dentist, optometrist, podiatrist, or nurse practitioner, and comprehensive nursing care. This community type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include preparation of prescribed medications, Medications may be administered under physician’s order by licensed nursing personnel or qualified medication aides, and resident must be observed for effects of medications and undesirable effects must be documented and the resident’s physician notified. This community has a number of provisions concerning food and diet which include communities must meet daily dietary requirements and requests, communities must consider residents’ food allergies, communities must provide three meals a day, and meals must provide a balanced distribution of the daily nutritional requirements.
