An assisted living community is a residential community which provides supervision, support, and aid to independent persons who are not in need of skilled nursing care. Services offered often involve aid with ADLs. Inhabitants may be kept under monitoring and evaluation. Under certain circumstances, communities may provide dementia care, skilled nursing, or respite. In Illinois, the annual median cost for an assisted living community is around $50,040 . The state of Illinois has specific standards related to this kind of community. The Illinois Department of Public Health certifies this type of community. There must be one bath or shower for every residents and one toilet for every 1 residents. This type of community is required to have a staff member on duty 24 hours a day. There is a maximum occupancy of 1 residents per room. The minimum number of residents for this community type is 3. Staff members obtain education in a number of fields. These areas include disaster procedures, philosophy and goals, promotion of dignity, and job responsibilities and limitations. Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to assure their needs are going to be met. This screening includes a number of areas of interest such as provider must ensure that the resident and the resident’s representative, if any, are informed of the potential consequences of activities that the provider considers to pose risks to health and/or safety, evaluation of a prospective resident’s cognitive condition, evaluation of a prospective resident’s physical condition, and assessment must be updated by a physician annually or upon a significant change in condition. This community has a number of provisions concerning food and diet which include communities must provide three daily meals. This type of community is required to offer a number of services. These include non-medical services, security, emergency response systems, and housekeeping. This community type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include only a licensed health care professionall employed by the community may administer medications, supervision of self-administered medications, and medication administration. Public assistance is available through A Medicaid 1915(c) waiver called the Supported Living Program and a 1915(b) waiver called the Managed Long-Term Services and Supports program.
