Assisted Living

An assisted living community is a residential living community which administers care, supervision, and support to self-sufficient individuals who do not need skilled nursing services. Assisted living communities often offer aid with transit and appointments, aid with the activities of daily life, and care supervision. In some instances, communities may provide Alzheimer’s care, skilled nursing, or hospice. In Georgia, the annual median cost for an assisted living community is around $135,450 . The state of Georgia has specific standards associated with this type of community. The Department of Community Health licenses assisted living communities and personal care homes governs this community type. Public assistance is available through 1915(c) Medicaid Waiver programs- ) the Community Care Services Program is managed by the Department of Community Health’s Division of Medical Assistance Plans and partners with the Division of Aging Services and the Service Options Using Resources in a Community Environment (SOURCE) program. Staff must receive training in a number of subjects. These include: assistance with medications, 24 hours of continuing education during the first year and 16 hours annually thereafter, hand hygiene, and emergency preparedness. This type of community is required to have a staff member on duty 24 hours a day. There must be one toilet for every 1 residents and one bath or shower for every 1 residents. The minimum number of residents for this community type is 25. This community has a number of provisions concerning food and diet which include at least three meals, one nutritious snack, and any therapeutic diets ordered by a resident’s health care provider must be provided each day. This community type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include cognitive and functionally able residents may self-administer medications , assisting with an Epi pen, and communities must assist residents with self-administration if requested. This type of community is required to offer a number of services. These include described as personal services, assisted living care, the provision of assisted self-preservation, and administration of medications by a certified medication aide. Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to ensure their needs are going to be met. This screening includes a number of areas of interest such as assessment to determine the residents cognitive and behavioral impairments, assessment to determine the resident’s functional capacity with regard to ADLs, personal preferences relative to care needs, and whether family supports are available.
