Assisted living communities administer oversight, social events, and personal care to people who are around 65 years of age or older. The services offered often include support with the activities of daily life. Inhabitants may be kept under monitoring and evaluation. Under certain circumstances, communities may provide nursing care, Alzheimer’s care, or continuing care. In Georgia, the annual median cost for an assisted living community is around $135,450 . Georgia has a number of provisions associated with this type of community. The Department of Community Health licenses assisted living communities and personal care homes supervises this type of community. This community type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include applying topical medications, communities must assist residents with self-administration if requested, and assisting residents with storage of medications. This community has a number of provisions concerning food and diet which include at least three meals, one nutritious snack, and any therapeutic diets ordered by a resident’s health care provider must be provided each day. There must be one toilet for every 1 residents and one bath or shower for every 1 residents. The minimum number of residents for this community type is 25. This type of community is required to have a staff member on duty 24 hours a day. Public assistance is available through 1915(c) Medicaid Waiver programs- ) the Community Care Services Program is managed by the Department of Community Health’s Division of Medical Assistance Plans and partners with the Division of Aging Services and the Service Options Using Resources in a Community Environment (SOURCE) program. Staff members receive education in a number of subjects. These include: identification of conduct constituting abuse and neglect, including the special needs of residents with dementia, hand hygiene, and proper food preparation. Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to ensure their needs are going to be met. This screening includes a number of areas of interest such as assessment to determine the residents cognitive and behavioral impairments, personal preferences relative to care needs, whether family supports are available, and A written care plan must document the assessment findings. This type of community is required to offer a number of services. These include the provision of assisted self-preservation, described as personal services, assisted living care, and administration of medications by a certified medication aide.
