An assisted living community is an organized living community which offers support, supervision, and aid to medically stable persons who are not in need of skilled nursing support. Assisted living communities commonly provide aid with daily activities, help with transportation and appointments, and supervision of care. In certain instances, communities may offer skilled nursing, Alzheimer’s care, or respite. In California, the annual median cost for an assisted living community is around $54,000 . The state of California has specific standards related to this type of community. The Department of Social Services, Community Care Licensing Division certifies this type of community. This community has a number of provisions concerning food and diet which include meals must comply with diet prescribed by physicians, meals must comply with residents’ dietary preference, communities must provide at least three meals per day and snacks, and the total daily diet must meet the recommended dietary allowances of the National Academy of Sciences Food and Nutrition Board. Public assistance is available through The state’s Medicaid 1915(c) Assisted Living Waiver program. There must be one toilet for every 1 residents and one bath or shower for every 1 residents. This type of community is required to have a staff member on duty 24 hours a day. Staff are required to obtain training in a number of subjects. These include: residents’ rights, knowledge of community services and resources, the aging process, and psychosocial aspects of aging. This community type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include medication administration and assistance with self-administration of medications.
