Assisted Living

An assisted living community is a residential community which offers assistance, care, and supervision to independent seniors who are not in need of skilled nursing care. Assisted living communities usually offer aid with the activities of daily life, supervision of care, and opportunities for leisurely activity. In select situations, communities may offer respite, nursing care, or hospice. In California, the annual median cost for an assisted living community is around $54,000 . The state of California maintains specific standards associated with this kind of community. The Department of Social Services, Community Care Licensing Division supervises this type of community. This community type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include assistance with self-administration of medications and medication administration. This community has a number of provisions concerning food and diet which include communities must provide at least three meals per day and snacks, meals must include an appropriate variety of foods, planned in consideration of cultural and religious backgrounds , the total daily diet must meet the recommended dietary allowances of the National Academy of Sciences Food and Nutrition Board, and meals must comply with diet prescribed by physicians. This type of community is required to have a staff member on duty 24 hours a day. There must be one bath or shower for every 1 residents and one toilet for every 1 residents. Public assistance is available through The state’s Medicaid 1915(c) Assisted Living Waiver program. Staff are required to receive training in a number of areas. These include: 10 hours of initial training within the first 4 weeks of employment and 4 additional hours annually, first-aid, recognizing signs and symptoms of dementia, and housekeeping and sanitation procedures.
