Residents may be kept under monitoring and assessment. In select cases, communities may provide skilled nursing, continuing care, or respite. In California, the annual median cost for an assisted living community is around $54,000 . The state of California maintains specific statutes associated with this type of community. The Department of Social Services, Community Care Licensing Division supervises this type of community. This type of community is required to have a staff member on duty 24 hours a day. There must be one toilet for every 1 residents and one bath or shower for every 1 residents. This community has a number of provisions concerning food and diet which include meals must comply with diet prescribed by physicians, the total daily diet must meet the recommended dietary allowances of the National Academy of Sciences Food and Nutrition Board, meals must include an appropriate variety of foods, planned in consideration of cultural and religious backgrounds , and meals must comply with residents’ dietary preference. Public assistance is available through The state’s Medicaid 1915(c) Assisted Living Waiver program. This community type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include medication administration and assistance with self-administration of medications. Staff members obtain training in a variety of fields. These areas include the importance and techniques of personal care services and universal precautions, Administrators must complete 40 hours of continuing education units every 2 years, 10 hours of initial training within the first 4 weeks of employment and 4 additional hours annually, and knowledge of community services and resources.
