Assisted living communities offer residential living communities and health care to people who may need support with things such as cooking meals or mobility. Assisted living communities often provide help with appointments and transit, assistance with the activities of daily life, and supervision of care. Under certain circumstances, communities may offer respite, “aging in place”, or hospice. In California, the annual median cost for an assisted living community is around $54,000 . California has specific statutes related to this kind of community. The Department of Social Services, Community Care Licensing Division regulates this community type. Public assistance is available through The state’s Medicaid 1915(c) Assisted Living Waiver program. This type of community is required to have a staff member on duty 24 hours a day. There must be one bath or shower for every 1 residents and one toilet for every 1 residents. This community has a number of provisions concerning food and diet which include the total daily diet must meet the recommended dietary allowances of the National Academy of Sciences Food and Nutrition Board, meals must comply with residents’ dietary preference, communities must provide at least three meals per day and snacks, and meals must include an appropriate variety of foods, planned in consideration of cultural and religious backgrounds . Staff are required to obtain training in a variety of fields. These include: first-aid, the importance and techniques of personal care services and universal precautions, knowledge required to safely assist with prescribed medications, and psychosocial aspects of aging.
