The city of Birmingham has a rich history and there are many important sites and landmarks that reflect its storied past. Birmingham’s status as a former industrial hub can be experienced through a visit to the Sloss Furnaces, a national historic landmark, once the largest iron manufacturer in the world. Built in the late 1800s and operating for almost a century, the Sloss Furnaces played a large role in the development of the city. The furnaces now feature a dedicated museum, as well as scheduled events and concerts throughout the year.

Kelly Ingram Park, a site integral to the civil rights movement, is another of Birmingham’s significant historical locations. The park features statues of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. as well as other celebrated civil rights figures, along with sculptures dedicated to the movement’s history.

Birmingham’s Vulcan Park and Museum features the largest cast-iron sculpture in the world: a towering representation of Vulcan, the Roman god, created in 1904 as a tribute to the city’s role in the iron industry. The park features 10 acres of green space as well as an interactive history museum with rotating events.

Baseball fans take note, Birmingham holds an important place in the history of the sport — the oldest professional baseball stadium, Rickwood Field, is located in the city. For a true taste of the American South, be sure not to miss Birmingham’s annual BBQ & Blues festival, a charity event hosted by Bob Sykes Bar-B-Q, an Alabama staple. The festival happens once a year and is a day-long celebration of barbecue cooking and blues music, featuring both local and national performers.
