Arts, Culture, Entertainment, and Recreation

The census-designated community of Columbia was first opened in 1967 with the core humanitarian value of combating issues of racial, religious, and class segregation. For over 50 years, Columbia has been a shining example of the power of civic planning and was even ranked by CNN as the 5th best place to live in the country in 2020. All of these factors make Columbia an excellent option for seniors looking to settle down in a quiet, friendly community.

Columbia is an example of a master-planned community, which means that its entire layout is designed around central locations that interconnect the various neighborhoods. Columbia features ten individual villages that are centered around Lake Kittamaqundi, a large man-made lake, and The Mall in Columbia shopping center. One fun fact about Columbia is that all of the streets are named after famous artworks and pieces of literature.

Columbia has a thriving arts and cultural scene centered around its outdoor venues and local bars. Popular spots for music performances include Nottingham’s Tavern, the Green Turtle, and the Merriweather Post Pavilion. Columbia is also home to the Howard County Library System, which is ranked as one of the top libraries in the country according to Hennen’s American Public Library Ratings. The Columbia Association maintains a number of recreational facilities including 29 outdoor and indoor swimming pools, an ice rink, and an equestrian center. The association also operates four different senior centers in Columbia that provide daytime supervision and social interaction.
