General overview of our 1.5 years at the Bristal

We chose this facility because 10% of their beds are medicaid, so primarily it was for the cost. My mom was at another facility for 3 years, but she wanted a change of scenery. The room sizes are fine, it fits quite a bit of furniture. The bathrooms are a large size. We have had a couple meals with her, it is more institutional like, but generally speaking the food is good. I would recommend this community. She has been in memory care for almost a year, and reasonably speaking I am satisfied with the accommodations and services that she is given here.... Read more

Seemed like a nice place!

We visited this community while looking into care options for a loved one. We thought this was a very nice community, it was warm and clean and new. They offer activities and a happy atmosphere for the residents. The staff was responsive and the residents seemed engaged. We would recommend the community to others.

Clean and cheerful

I liked the absolute cleanliness of it and the cheerful environment. I do think it is a little overpriced though and I heard from my mother that the food could be better.

Nice place, overall

Things have worked out very well at The Bristal at Woodcliff Lake, I'd give them high marks across the board. The facility itself is well kept and clean, and everyone that we've worked with has been very friendly. It's a nice place, and definitely worth a look for those looking into senior living in the area.

Not very welcoming or compassionate or caring.

It's brand new, so everything was beautiful. The apartments were large and spacious, they had exercises and activities, the food seemed excellent. They have memory care just like other places, and different levels of care. They don't look at the individual and whether or not they have behavioral or wandering issues. It seems they just don't want anyone who is less than desirable in their picture perfect area. They don't care about a long marriage, they want the extra money, if they wanted to stay together they would have both had to do to the memory care area. That was unacceptable for them. They weren't very welcoming, and didn't seem to care about much besides their bottom line, and their appearance.

Response from The Bristal at Woodcliff Lake

August 12, 2015

The Bristal at Woodcliff Lake is one of our newest and loveliest communities — we thank this reviewer for noting so — and we are quite proud and privileged to bring this high level of senior care to families in New Jersey. At all communities of The Bristal, we conduct comprehensive individual assessments of each arriving resident in order to create highly personalized care plans, including persons who arrive as a couple. While all factors are welcomed and taken into account, care plans are always created and executed based on individual resident need, especially when one or both persons in the couple presents with Alzheimer’s or some other form of dementia. These residents are cared for in a dedicated and secure memory care area called Reflections, and we do this in order to ensure the safety and security of these residents as well as the entire community. At The Bristal, we are extremely flexible and compassionate, and we are more than pleased to consider every opportunity to accommodate our residents’ living needs and preferences, including those of couples, so long as doing so does not hinder the care they need to receive nor compromise their own safety or that of other residents. In addition, please consider this: When it comes to making a choice about an Assisted Living community, we have found, over our more than a decade operating, that every resident and family has unique and diverse needs — distinct expectations, priorities, perspectives and experiences — and that some aspects which prove essential for some families are less important to others. This is why we encourage all families who are considering The Bristal to visit us in person, take a tour, ask their own questions, and see for themselves what makes us such a successful and sought after senior care solution in the communities we are privileged to serve.

Being brand new, the facilities are beautiful. Also being new, there are only a few residents in the memory care section, which appears to provide sufficient personal care by the staff but may limit personal interactions with others. Not sure if they are up to speed with their activities yet. There was a glitch with the transfer from the nursing home to The Bristal due to the defined dietary requirements of my sister. The Bristal cannot accommodate a pureed diet as indicated by the nursing home. It took about three weeks to resolve the issue (twice) which was very frustrating. The overall staff is friendly and helpful. The ratings are based on the first week of residence.

Response from The Bristal at Woodcliff Lake

June 9, 2014

Our first priority at The Bristal is our residents and addressing their needs. We do, in fact, puree food for residents. However, The Bristal has strict protocols when dealing with the health issues that may affect care. People with aspiration problems sometimes need pureed food. Sometimes people with dentures require pureed food and aspiration isn’t the issue. That is why we might question how to prepare a given dish for an individual and it can take a little time to clarify each situation. Because we are so careful in meeting the individual needs of our residents at The Bristal; issues rarely, but sometimes arise during a transition such as this, and we do everything in our power to minimize any impact or discomfort.

First review of Reflections at The Bristal

My mother has been in the facility for just over one week - and the Reflections unit has been open only for a few weeks. So far, everything has been really great, from the food, to the care-givers, to the room, and overall ambience. I am very happy.

Good value and impressive facilities but...

The Bristal at Woodcliff Lake opened in November 2013 and is still in the process of getting organized. The main issues we are having is the "patient to aid" ratio and shortage of trained help. This is probably related to their attempt to keeping costs down. Management employees are filling in to do lower level jobs. Because this facility is corporately owned, the corporation determines when to hire more help which might be a problem.

Response from The Bristal at Woodcliff Lake

March 19, 2014

Since The Bristal was founded, it has always been our strict policy to maintain a high staff-to-resident ratio, one that meets and, in many cases, exceeds industry standards in order to ensure that all resident care needs are continuously and consistently met. When any of our brand new communities are being established, as is the case with The Bristal at Woodcliff Lake, which is privately owned, the staff is scaled in lockstep with the growing resident population until maximum occupancy is reached. This is a normal procedure for any organization: It staffs up in accordance with its growing need. In point of fact, there is no shortage of trained help at Woodcliff Lake or at any community of The Bristal. We are mindful to hire only those candidates we believe possess the experience, attributes and skillsets required to comply with our demanding standards of excellence. At The Bristal, it is perfectly normal that management employees “chip in and cover” whenever required, since, in fact, they all have a hands-on working knowledge of the care that is needed, and are happy to assist. We believe this is a good thing.

Wonderful Place

The Bristal is a beautiful place that my mom now calls home. It has modern décor and lovely rooms with lots of windows in which to do activities. The apartment in which she lives is spacious with lots of natural light and very safe. She keeps snacks in her room but eats in the dining room with others. From my mom's feedback, the food is good. They even check to make sure she gets to breakfast by knocking on her door in the mornings. The staff seems patient and excited to be there. They know where my mom is at all times and they take great care of her. The place just opened and they have less than half the residents living there. More come daily. Once The Bristal is completely full, it will be interesting to see how the staff handles things. Since it is new, there was an initial issue with the cable connections. The director of maintenance was right on top of things. He stopped in the hall to talk to my mom and I about the problem and was so warm and friendly. He apologized for the cable issue (although it was really temporary) and had the issue resolved when he said it would be. By the way, this was on a Sunday.

Brand new community, and great so far

This is a brand new community, and so far Mom loves it. Everything is immaculate, and I haven't noticed any start-up issues or hiccups, which is a great sign. Mom has been enjoying all of the staff and residents getting to know each other together, since it is so new. The staff are all friendly, and on top of things, and the activities seem great. The price was also lower than other places I looked at, better service at a lower price.
