Bill was born in Ohio in 1921. He joined the Civilian Conservation Corps at the age of "18"; serving twice. He left to join the U.S. Navy serving in WWII as well as the Korean War. He was assigned to the USS Clark, USS Porter, USS Whitney, USS Fanshaw Bay, USS Barnes, USS Swearer, USS Herbert C. Jones, USS Cates, USS Noble, USS Washburn, USS Catapult, and USS Tawasa. For a time, he was also the skipper of a tug stationed at San Diego, CA. He received the Navy Good Conduct Medal, the American Defense Service Medal, the Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Medal, the World War II Victory Medal, the United Nations Service Medal and two Presidential Unit Citations.
