Fred Roscoe Barnes Sr.
Branch: Army
War or Conflict: World War II
Years of Service: 3
He stood there at the station's gate prepared to board,
Then with tears kissed his bride and unborn child once more.
A courageous young man set sail from homeland that day,
And journeyed across the ocean so strong and brave.

Love letters from home made frightened men strong;
Where war continued and bombs thundered so long.
Families and sweethearts prayed their soldier'd survive
And God and miracles brought him back alive.

For on the horizon to a new world he'd return
With new roads and bridges to build instead of burn;
Full of hopes and dreams for his little family,
The future was blessed and bright for what would be.

There was fruit of the womb, and toys scattered around;
It was a home where a workman's labor abounds.
Off to work before sun up he'd go day after day,
Trucking past sunset with too little rest or play.

Relentlessly paved with his own sweat, sand and gravel
Across the land the highways were built for travel.
Then in just a blink of an eye the children were grown,
And suddenly they were out and off on their own.

At last retirement and rest was just around the bend
But who knew how soon would come one journey's end?
We'd celebrate Mom's final trip around the sun
And reminisce all those wonderful years well done.

With Precious Memories, and Amazing Grace
The light's still on there at the old home place
And the radio still plays a lonesome bluegrass sound;
Where a wayfaring stranger is homeward bound.
