My Mom and Dad were married for a short time before he left for England to fly a P-51 fighter plane with the 354th Fighter Group. He flew bomber escort missions to and from Germany from September 1943 until about March 1944. He was killed April 5, 1944 while strafing a German airfield in France. His medals include a silver star with 4 oak leaf clusters, a purple heart and an air medal. He was credited with 4 enemy aircraft kills. My mother subsequently remarried twice, both to WW II veterans who are now deceased. She is 92 years old and resides in a long term care facility with increasing dementia.
