Jim served in the USAF from 1951-1974. He served in the Korean and Vietnam wars as a fighter pilot flying the F-80 Shooting Star and F-86 Sabre Jet in Korea and the F-100 in Vietnam. He was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross and Air Medal in both theaters, along with numerous other medals during his career. He received the Meritorious Service Medal for being an architect of the A10 Thunderbolt (Warthog) attack airplane. He graduated from the University of Illinois with an Aeronautical and Astronautical Engineering degree.

Upon retirement he taught in the Seminole County Public School system in Florida for 18 years. He was named Lake Mary High School Teacher of the Year in 1988-89 and Seminole County High School Mathematics teacher of the year in 1990.
