Mateo G. Gonzales
Branch: Army
Rank: Master Sergeant (E-8)
War or Conflict: Battle of Attu, Aleutian Islands 1942-1943
Years of Service: 5
Upon Honorable Discharge from the Army in 1945, Mateo G. Gonzales received numerous decorations and citations. He was awarded the APTO Medal with Bronze Service Star; Good Conduct Medal; American Defense Service Medal; and ATO Medal.
After returning back home (Los Angeles, California), Mateo G. Gonzales was chosen by the Army to participate in the War Heroes Performance Troupe to raise money for the war effort by promoting War Bonds. In doing so, he traveled to major large cities throughout the USA and reenacted various battle scenes from his experiences while fighting on the small but strategically important island of Attu in the Aleutian Islands. The Battle of Attu was the only battle in WW II fought on the North American continent.
When Mateo G. Gonzales enlisted in the Army in May of 1941, he was sent for training to the California training base of Fort Ord. He had musical experience prior to enlisting, thus the Army assigned him to play a bugle at the base. In doing so, he was considered one of the Bugle Boys of Company B; a song made popular by the infamous Andrew Sisters.
