Charles enlisted upon graduation from high school in 1943. He was trained as a tail gunner on Mitchell B-25's and was sent to Corsica in 1944 and then to Ancona, Italy. He completed 49 missions and was returning to the US for deployment to Japan after VE day when the bomb was dropped and the war ended. He had married his grade school sweetheart shortly before leaving for Europe. They moved to Gainesville, FL and he completed a degree in Agriculture (courtesy of the GI Bill) Charles and Grace returned to their home town of Winter Garden, FL where they owned a successful citrus caretaking business from 1949 to 1989 while raising three children.
