Len spent the first few years of his military service in the US Army 1st Infantry Division. Their truck overturned during an invasion in North Africa and he was the only survivor. After his recovery, he was reassigned to a division in Italy where he was responsible for escorting VIPs such as Bob Hope while they visited the troops. He was awarded a Purple Heart.
