Ken enlisted in the U.S. Coast Guard in 1965. After completing Officer Candidate School, he was sent to flight training as a helicopter pilot at Naval Air Station, Pensacola. Flying became a passion for Ken. He pursued this passion for 20+ years in the Coast Guard with postings in NJ, TX, WA, CA, AL, and Antarctica. He retired from the Coast Guard as a Lt. Commander at Coast Guard Station, Arcata, CA in 1985.

Ken was buried with full military honors at Barrancas National Cemetery, Naval Air Station Pensacola, FL, the place where his flying career began as well as his life with wife, Julie.

Throughout his career, he received numerous honors, medals, and commendations including the Distinguished Air Medal for outstanding valor during extremely hazardous rescues.
