William B. Smith
Rank: First Lieutenant
War or Conflict: WWII
Years of Service: 2
My father-in-law, Bill Smith, is 95 years young. He was in the Army Air Corps (before there was a separate Air Force), and flew as a navigator on the B-17 in Italy during the last years of WWII. He was stationed with the 15th Air Force (5th Wing) in Foggia. Squadron was the 429th. Last year, we took him to Boeing Field in Seattle and he flew in a B-17 again! He is one of the most optimistic people I have ever met. After the war, he returned to Michigan, graduated from University of Michigan, got his Masters Degree from U of M in Business, worked at General Motors for 10 years and then another 43 years at Ford Motor Company. He and my mother-in-law, Joanne, raised 5 children. Thank you, dad, for your faithful service to our country. GO ARMY!
