Sgt. Valdez was born in Texas but enlisted in the Army when parents were doing migrant work in Michigan. He was an airborne combat engineer. His outfit was the 32nd Combat Engineer Group: however he deployed to Korea with the 811th Engineer Group. He was awarded The National Defense Service Medal, The Korean Service Medal W/3 Bronze Service Stars, The United Nations Service Metal and The Good Conduct Metal. And he received an honorable discharge out of Fort Carson Colorado in 1955.
