Assisted living communities provide a sense of community as well as individualized help. The types of service offered often include assistance with the activities of daily life. Occupants may be kept under supervision and assessment. In certain cases, communities may provide dementia care, hospice, or respite. The state of Wisconsin maintains specific statutes associated with this type of community. The Wisconsin Department of Health Services, Bureau of Assisted Living, Division of Quality Assurance, regulates community-based residential communities (CBRFs) supervises this community type. There must be one bath or shower for every 1 residents and one toilet for every 1 residents. This type of community is required to offer a number of services. These include leisure time activities, transportation, resident-specific services, and behavior management. This community type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include Residents may self-administer medications if they are capable, when medication administration is not supervised by an RN, practitioner, or pharmacist, the CBRF must arrange for a pharmacist to package and label a resident’s prescription medications in unit dose, and If the medication administration is supervised by a licensed healthcare professionall, the community must ensure that these individuals coordinate the medication administration process and system. Staff must receive education in a variety of subjects. These areas include development of service plans, reporting abuse, provision of personal care, and needs assessment of prospective residents. Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to make sure their needs are going to be met. This screening includes a number of areas of interest such as the plan must specify which program services will be provided to meet the resident’s needs as identified by the assessment and the frequency with which each service will be provided, community must develop a temporary service plan to meet immediate needs, initial comprehensive mental and physical assessment, and reassessments must be conducted at least annually, and when residents have a change in needs, abilities, or condition. This community has a number of provisions concerning food and diet which include these meals must meet the recommended dietary allowances based on current dietary guidelines for Americans, these meals must meet residents special dietary needs, therapeutic diets must be provided if ordered by a physician, and communities must provide at least three nutritious meals a day and a nutritious snack. Public assistance is available through The Elderly and Physically Disabled 1915(c) Waiver program, the Community Options 1915(c) Waiver program, and the Medicaid managed care 1915(b)(c) Family Care Waiver program for the aged and physically disabled.
