Assisted living communities provide oversight, care, and social opportunities to people who are around 65 years old. The types of service offered often include assistance with the activities of daily life. Occupants may be kept under supervision and assessment. In some cases, communities may offer hospice, skilled nursing, or continuing care. In Washington, the annual median cost for an assisted living community is around $66,000 . The state of Washington has a number of provisions associated with this type of community. The Washington State Department of Social and Health Services (DSHS), Aging and Long-Term Support Administration (Department) governs this type of community. This community type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include medication administration, residents must state whether they will receive medication assistance or medication administration services, and resident self-administration of medication. Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to assure their needs are going to be met. This screening includes a number of areas of interest such as significant known behaviors or symptoms that may cause concern or require special care, level of personal care needs, mental illness, and an initial comprehensive exam including medical history . Public assistance is available through Medicaid 1915(c) Waiver program–Community Options Program Entry System (COPES).This type of community is required to offer a number of services. These include basic personal care services, communities choose to provide certain health support services, promote each resident’s health, safety, and well-being consistent with the resident negotiated care plan, and general responsibility for each resident. There must be one toilet for every 1 residents and one bath or shower for every 1 residents. In total, there can be no more than 2 residents to a room. Staff members obtain training in a number of subjects. These areas include safety training (3 hours), HIV/AIDS, orientation (2 hours), and basic training (70 hours). This community has a number of provisions concerning food and diet which include practitioner, not exceeding more than 14 hours between the evening meal and breakfast , a minimum of three meals a day at regular intervals, and nourishing and palatable meals adjusted to meet individual preferences to the extent reasonably possible.
