Assisted Living

Assisted living communities administer social interaction, oversight, and personal care to persons around 65 years old. Assisted living communities frequently offer outings for social activity, assistance with appointments and transportation, and supervision of care. Under certain circumstances, communities may provide respite, continuing care, or dementia care. Texas has a number of provisions associated with this type of community. The Texas Department of Aging and Disability Services (DADS) licenses several types of assisted living communities licenses this community type. There must be one bath or shower for every 10 residents and one toilet for every 1 residents. The maximum occupancy is 4 residents per room. This type of community is required to offer a number of services. These include assistance with activities of daily living, activity and/or social program for residents, general supervision or oversight, and supervision or direct administration of medications. Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to make sure their needs are going to be met. This screening includes a number of areas of interest such as a comprehensive assessment , must address the residents individual needs, preferences, and strengths, and interviews, and home visits. Public assistance is available through Medicaid 1115 demonstration managed care waiver program–called STAR+PLUS. This community type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include assisting residents with taking medications, supervision of a resident’s medication regimen, and reminders to take medications at the prescribed time. Staff must receive training in a number of fields. These include: community resources, assisted living standards, skills for working with residents, families, and other professionall providers ethics, and federal laws. This community has a number of provisions concerning food and diet which include exceptions must be specifically approved by the Department, menus must be prepared to provide a balanced and nutritious diet and such as that recommended by the national food and nutrition board, Therapeutic diets as ordered by the resident’s physician must be provided according to the service plan, and communities must provide at least three balanced and nutritious meals or the equivalent per day.
