Assisted Living

Assisted living communities arrange residential communities and health care for people who might need help with dressing or self-administering medication. Assisted living communities frequently provide chances for organized activity, help with appointments and transit, and supervision of care. Under certain circumstances, communities may provide Alzheimer’s care, nursing, or hospice. Texas maintains specific statutes associated with this type of community. The Texas Department of Aging and Disability Services (DADS) licenses several types of assisted living communities governs this type of community. Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to make sure their needs are going to be met. This screening includes a number of areas of interest such as a comprehensive assessment , interviews, and home visits, and must address the residents individual needs, preferences, and strengths. Public assistance is available through Medicaid 1115 demonstration managed care waiver program–called STAR+PLUS. This community type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include assisting residents with taking medications, obtaining medications from a pharmacy, and supervision of a resident’s medication regimen. This community has a number of provisions concerning food and diet which include communities must provide at least three balanced and nutritious meals or the equivalent per day, menus must be prepared to provide a balanced and nutritious diet and such as that recommended by the national food and nutrition board, Therapeutic diets as ordered by the resident’s physician must be provided according to the service plan, and The meals must be served daily, at regular times, with no more than a 16-hour span between a substantial evening meal and breakfast the following morning. There must be one bath or shower for every 10 residents and one toilet for every 1 residents. There is a maximum occupancy of 4 residents per room. This type of community is required to offer a number of services. These include activity and/or social program for residents, assistance with activities of daily living, personal care, and supervision or direct administration of medications. Staff must receive education in a variety of areas. These include: financial management, basic principles of management, basic emergency first-aid, and abuse/neglect.
