Assisted living communities administer personal care, supervision, and social events to persons around 65 years of age or older. The services provided often involve aid with ADLs. Occupants may be kept under monitoring and evaluation. In select situations, communities may provide respite, continuing care, or Alzheimer’s care. Texas has a number of provisions associated with this type of community. The Texas Department of Aging and Disability Services (DADS) licenses several types of assisted living communities supervises this community type. Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to assure their needs are going to be met. This screening includes a number of areas of interest such as must address the residents individual needs, preferences, and strengths, interviews, and home visits, and a comprehensive assessment . This community type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include assisting residents with taking medications, reminders to take medications at the prescribed time, and listing the medication taken on a resident’s medication profile record. Public assistance is available through Medicaid 1115 demonstration managed care waiver program–called STAR+PLUS. This community has a number of provisions concerning food and diet which include communities must provide at least three balanced and nutritious meals or the equivalent per day, The meals must be served daily, at regular times, with no more than a 16-hour span between a substantial evening meal and breakfast the following morning, exceptions must be specifically approved by the Department, and Therapeutic diets as ordered by the resident’s physician must be provided according to the service plan. Staff must receive education in a number of fields. These areas include resident assessment, accessibility requirements, assisted living standards, and abuse/neglect. In total, there can be no more than 4 residents to a room. There must be one toilet for every 1 residents and one bath or shower for every 10 residents. This type of community is required to offer a number of services. These include assistance with activities of daily living, activity and/or social program for residents, general supervision or oversight, and supervision or direct administration of medications.
