Assisted Living

Assisted living facilities provide organized living communities and health care for persons who need support with washing or mobility. The services provided often include support with the activities of daily life. Inhabitants may be kept under monitoring and assessment. Under certain circumstances, facilities may offer dementia care, skilled nursing care, or continuing care. The state of Texas maintains a number of stipulations related to this kind of facility. The Texas Department of Aging and Disability Services (DADS) licenses several types of assisted living facilities governs this facility type. Staff members receive training in a number of areas. These areas include resident assessment, financial management, skills for working with residents, and assisted living standards. This facility type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include obtaining medications from a pharmacy, listing the medication taken on a resident's medication profile record, and assisting residents with taking medications. Public assistance is available through Medicaid 1115 demonstration managed care waiver program--called STAR+PLUS. Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to assure their needs are going to be met. This screening includes a number of areas of interest such as a comprehensive assessment , interviews, and home visits, and must address the residents’ individual needs, preferences, and strengths. There must be one bath or shower for every 10 residents and one toilet for every 1 residents. There is a maximum occupancy of 4 residents per room. This facility has a number of provisions concerning food and diet which include The meals must be served daily, at regular times, with no more than a 16-hour span between a substantial evening meal and breakfast the following morning, menus must be prepared to provide a balanced and nutritious diet and such as that recommended by the national food and nutrition board, exceptions must be specifically approved by the Department, and Therapeutic diets as ordered by the resident's physician must be provided according to the service plan. This type of facility is required to offer a number of services. These include personal care, supervision or direct administration of medications, general supervision or oversight, and assistance with activities of daily living.
