Assisted Living

Assisted living facilities arrange organized living communities and health care to seniors who might need a helping hand with things such as mobility or dressing. Services provided often involve aid with the activities of daily life. Residents may be kept under observation and evaluation. In some instances, facilities may offer hospice, nursing, or continuing care. Texas has specific rules associated with this kind of facility. The Texas Department of Aging and Disability Services (DADS) licenses several types of assisted living facilities supervises this type of facility. Staff members obtain training in a variety of fields. These include: federal laws, financial management, skills for working with residents, and food and nutrition services. Public assistance is available through Medicaid 1115 demonstration managed care waiver program--called STAR+PLUS.There is a maximum occupancy of 4 residents per room. There must be one bath or shower for every 10 residents and one toilet for every 1 residents. This facility has a number of provisions concerning food and diet which include menus must be prepared to provide a balanced and nutritious diet and such as that recommended by the national food and nutrition board, The meals must be served daily, at regular times, with no more than a 16-hour span between a substantial evening meal and breakfast the following morning, exceptions must be specifically approved by the Department, and facilities must provide at least three balanced and nutritious meals or the equivalent per day. Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to ensure their needs are going to be met. This screening includes a number of areas of interest such as must address the residents’ individual needs, preferences, and strengths, interviews, and home visits, and a comprehensive assessment . This facility type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include residents may self-administer their own medication, obtaining medications from a pharmacy, and listing the medication taken on a resident's medication profile record. This type of facility is required to offer a number of services. These include general supervision or oversight, activity and/or social program for residents, personal care, and supervision or direct administration of medications.
