Nursing Homes

A nursing home provides residence to at least two seniors who are not related by marriage or by blood to the administrator. A nursing home facility offers its inhabitants 24-hour care administered by registered nurses. These caregivers provide care for seniors who are unable to properly take care of themselves due to the effects of aging.

This type of facility is a familiar and easy living alternative for persons 65 years or older, however nursing homes will routinely persons 55 and above which is unusual for other senior care types.Nursing homes are required to provide room and bed maintenance services, nursing and related services, routine personal hygiene items, and specialized rehabilitative services (treatment for mental illness or intellectual disability) to residents. As a resident of a nursing home, you can expect the right to make complaints, be free from abuse and neglect, form or participate in resident groups, and have your representative notified about your care. There are some services that may come at a cost to residents which can include cosmetic and grooming items, personal comfort items, and specially prepared food. A large number of residents are single women with smaller social support groups, and about fifty percent of nursing home residents are older than the age of 85.
