Assisted Living

Assisted living communities offer apartment-style housing and social events as well as personalized help. Assisted living communities commonly provide supervision of care, help with daily activities, and opportunities for social activity. Under certain circumstances, communities may offer hospice, respite, or skilled nursing. The state of Texas maintains a number of stipulations related to this kind of community. The Texas Department of Aging and Disability Services (DADS) licenses several types of assisted living communities regulates this community type. There is a maximum occupancy of 4 residents per room. There must be one bath or shower for every 10 residents and one toilet for every 1 residents. This community type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include assisting residents with taking medications, listing the medication taken on a resident’s medication profile record, and reminders to take medications at the prescribed time. Staff must obtain training in a variety of subjects. These areas include skills for working with residents, families, and other professionall providers ethics, basic principles of management, accessibility requirements, and resident characteristics (including dementia). Public assistance is available through Medicaid 1115 demonstration managed care waiver program–called STAR+PLUS. This community has a number of provisions concerning food and diet which include communities must provide at least three balanced and nutritious meals or the equivalent per day, The meals must be served daily, at regular times, with no more than a 16-hour span between a substantial evening meal and breakfast the following morning, Therapeutic diets as ordered by the resident’s physician must be provided according to the service plan, and exceptions must be specifically approved by the Department. This type of community is required to offer a number of services. These include personal care, general supervision or oversight, supervision or direct administration of medications, and assistance with activities of daily living. Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to assure their needs are going to be met. This screening includes a number of areas of interest such as must address the residents individual needs, preferences, and strengths, a comprehensive assessment , and interviews, and home visits.
