Assisted Living

An assisted living community is an organized living community which administers supervision, support, and care to medically stable individuals who do not require skilled nursing care. Services offered often involve assistance with activities of daily living. Occupants may be kept under observation and assessment. Under certain circumstances, communities may provide Alzheimer’s care, hospice, or respite. Ohio has specific statutes related to this kind of community. Ohio Department of Health supervises this type of community. Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to guarantee their needs are going to be met. This screening includes a number of areas of interest such as cognitive status review, medical diagnoses, medication review, and psychical history. This type of community is required to offer a number of services. These include activities, personal care, supervision, and assistance with self-administration of medication. Public assistance is available through 1915(c) Assisted Living Program and the 1915(b)(c) Managed Care Demonstration Waiver called MyCare. The maximum occupancy is 4 residents per room. There must be one toilet for every 8 residents and one bath or shower for every 8 residents. The minimum number of residents for this community type is 17. Staff must receive education in a variety of fields. These include: residents rights, job responsibilities, securing emergency assistance, and community procedures. This community type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include verifying labels, observation, and reminders.
