Assisted Living

Assisted living communities administer healthcare, social interaction, and oversight to persons who are about 65 years of age or older. Services provided often include support with ADLs. Residents may be kept under monitoring and evaluation. Under certain circumstances, communities may provide respite, hospice, or “aging in place”. The state of Ohio has a number of stipulations related to this kind of community. Ohio Department of Health governs this type of community. Staff members receive education in a number of subjects. These areas include job responsibilities, residents rights, securing emergency assistance, and community procedures. The minimum number of residents for this community type is 17. In total, there can be no more than 4 residents to a room. There must be one bath or shower for every 8 residents and one toilet for every 8 residents. Public assistance is available through 1915(c) Assisted Living Program and the 1915(b)(c) Managed Care Demonstration Waiver called MyCare. This community type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include reminders, verifying labels, and assistance organizing medication. Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to ensure their needs are going to be met. This screening includes a number of areas of interest such as functional status assessment, medication review, cognitive status review, and health history. This type of community is required to offer a number of services. These include intermittent nursing services, assistance with self-administration of medication, activities, and personal care.
